How to Install a Network Printer on a Server

If you run a Windows or Mac server that multiple computers connect to, then you can install a network printer on the server computer. Once the printer has been added to the server, the other systems that connect to the server will also be able to print to it over the Internet.

PC server running Windows 2003 or Mac server running Mac OS X Server
Networked printer
Instructions

PC Instructions

Make sure the networked printer is turned on and connect to the Internet using an Ethernet cable.

Click “Start” on the server computer and click the “Printers and Faxes” icon.

Click “Add a Printer” on the left side of the window.

Choose “A Network Printer” from the pop-up window, and click “Next.”

Type in the exact location or Internet Protocol (IP) address of the networked printer, and then click “Next.”

Select the printer manufacturer and model from the list of driver options. Click “Finish” to complete the printer installation process.

Mac Instructions

Open “System Preferences” by clicking on the icon in the Dock.

Go to the “Print & Fax” control panel underneath the Hardware heading.

Click on the “+” symbol on the left side of the window.

Go to the “IP” tab at the top of the window and type in the IP address of the network printer.

Choose the correct printer model from the “Print Using” drop-down menu and click “Add” to finish installing the network printer.

How to Print on Dot Matrix Printer

Dot matrix printers are an older printer technology, but they are still used today for special functions. Dot matrix printers are a kind of impact printer, which can be used to print on specially stacked carbon paper, creating multiple copies simultaneously. Higher-end models also provide very high speed printing, faster than what is available from inkjet or similarly priced laser printers.

    • Select a dot matrix printer that has connectors that are also available on your computer. Many dot matrix printers use older serial or parallel connections, which may not be included in newer computers. It will be much easier for you to connect a dot matrix printer to your computer, if you use or purchase a model that has USB connections.

    • Connect your dot matrix printer to your computer, using the included cabling. Plug one end of the cable into the dot matrix printer, and the other into the appropriate port on your computer. Do not force the cable. If it does not fit properly, it may be the wrong port for that cable.

    • Install the drivers for the dot matrix printer onto your computer. If these are not on a disc included with the printer, the drivers are usually available on the manufacturer’s website. (While computers come with many printer drivers installed, dot matrix printers are typically not included.) The drivers will come with an installer application. Launch the application from the disc, or from the downloaded files, and the installer will walk you through the process.

    • Print to your dot matrix printer from any application. If several printers are available to your computer, in the printer dialog box, make sure that you have selected the dot matrix printer.

Not having the software doesn’t have to be a problem however, just follow these simple steps for printer installation and you’ll be printing in no time!

      To start the printer installation, you will first need to connect the computer to the printer device. Make sure that they are firmly connected.

      Turn on your computer and after it has booted and finished the start-up procedure, turn on the printer.

      Select the “Start” menu and then select “Settings”.

      Then select “Printers and Faxes”.

    • 5

      Next select the option “Add a Printer”.

      When the printer Wizard starts up, select “Next” and let the computer “detect plug and play printer”.

      If your computer cannot find the appropriate driver then choose the appropriate printer port (probably USB), and then choose the manufacturer of the printer.

      Finally, select the network printer model from the drop-down list and click “Next”. If the printer device was not in the list or for some reason the driver was not available on the system, you can always visit the manufacturer website and download the installation CD from them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Installing a network printer without the software is also simple.
  • Most any modern printer drivers (network, laser, etc.) should be available from the manufacturer.
  • If the printer is a combination device (printer/fax/copier) and you want to use all the features, you may need to download the application software from the manufacturer.
